Mister Deathman (1977)

Artwork by Kwow

Once upon a time there lived a painter named Kwow. He electrified the Thai poster art scene with sumptuous mini masterpieces like MISTER DEATHMAN, a little known Blaxploitation spy film starring David Broadnax.

Kwow, whose given name is still a mystery to me, was a protege of Tongdee Panumas. Though his work usually lacks the refinement of Tongdee and some of his contemporaries, he had a knack for making the crude endearing. Take this poster, for instance. If I had to guess, I'd say that he muddled the composition and was forced into placing the three upper personages on the central figure's forehead. What would seem like an awkward placement, however, turned out to be a genius move.

It's likely that MISTER DEATHMAN didn't make it into Thailand until sometime in the early 1980's due to a Hollywood boycott of the Thai market, but we'll save the details of that for another post.

MISTER DEATHMAN is one that will almost definitely get framed and hung on my wall of my imagination.
