Artwork by Prayote
I am acutely aware of the fact that there is little chronological consistency to my posts here on TPB. If I buckled down and showed some real discipline, this might turn into a comprehensive study of the Thai movie poster craft from its early days to its gradual demise in the early 1990's. But for the time being my mania is not in full swing. Take this as glorified show and tell, with a bit of half-assed research thrown in for good measure.
EBIRAH: HORROR OF THE DEEP is a Japanese Kaiju film made in 1966 by Toho Studios. I've never seen it, but the Thai poster indicates that it might be a campy hoot like all its giant monster genre ilk of the era. You know, Godzilla, Mothra and those kinds of goons.
Prayote is the artist on this one. He seems to have been one of the most frequently commissioned artists for movies released by Capitol Films, a Bangkok-based distribution company that ran a movie theater of the same name. Capitol Films imported a lot of B-grade Japanese cinema, as well as B-grade Spaghetti Westerns from Italy and martial arts films from Hong Kong and Taiwan. Towards the end of their run they were one of the main importers of international smut to Thailand.
Anyhow, Prayote's work varies between deeply crude and beautifully refined. I find myself enjoying it no matter which end of the spectrum it falls.
EBIRAH: HORROR OF THE DEEP, is in my opinion, a minor masterpiece.
The Thai name translates to "Giant Shrimp Vs. Godzilla"
Enjoy some close-ups of the poster below.
