The Drunken Master (1978)

Artwork by Kham

With the success of SNAKE IN THE EAGLE’S SHADOW, Jackie Chan was catapulted into super stardom. Later in 1978 both him and Yuen Siu-Tien were partnered up again for the DRUNKEN MASTER, which was an even bigger success than their previous film. In fact, for the Thai market, this film was billed as part two to SNAKE IN THE EAGLE’S SHADOW.
When the film was shipped to Thailand, distributor Krung Kasem Film turned once again to Kham for the poster art. The above was the outcome.
The central figure of Chan doing the horse stance over a lit joss stick was, as far as I can tell, lifted from some promotional stills for the movie. Kham then proceeded to go to town on this poster. Aside from the central figure, Chan is depicted another 5 times enduring the torturous training regiment of Sam the Seed (Yuen Siu-Tien), whose figure looms large over all the Chan vignettes.
This poster is one of Kham’s greats, I think. It’s also a prime example of his masterful color pallet.
Translation of the Thai name = The Kid with the Drunken Punch
